The eldritch mysteries of SEO and blog article marketing (aka BUM Marketing) are being revealed to me one at a time, in a sort of horrible parade of truths about the internet. I’ve always dabbled at this kind of thing, but it’s only beginning to become apparent that I’m a babe in the woods.
One service that is very cool and coheres to the values of Deranged Penguin is Squidoo, an article (or “lens”) creation service that allows you to monetize your content and also rank much higher on Google and other search engines due to the volume of traffic. The idea from an optimization standpoint is to find a keyword phrase that is relatively un-trafficked but still a rational search query, and then write a Squidoo lens that uses that phrase as a title. You can see my first example here. You’ll note that I don’t use my affiliate links to point to the services at the bottom – in my mind it vitiates the educational premise. The idea is to get some traffic for the blog and to establish a reputation of trustworthiness. If a visitor comes here from Squidoo and clicks on one of my lovely 125×125 squares, they know what they’re getting into.
The best part of Squidoo is that you can split revenues with charitable organizations of Squidoo’s or your choosing. You’re never going to make a mint off a Squidoo lens, but the impact of millions of Squidoo’s making small money has a big impact on the organizations who receive the benefit.
Check it out!
